The population in our nation has been aging dramatically since 1970s. By the beginning of the 21st century, Japan has become the most aged country in the world, facing the unprecedented challenges as an aged society. Population aging is a result of longer lives, which we have long wished for, and the declining number of births, which is also related to aging of life course such as delayed marriage and child bearing. Hence, we need social research data in a wide variety of fields in order to understand and work on population aging and an aged society.
Japan Aging Research Center (JARC) was founded in 1985 when people started realizing needs for interdisciplinary research on an aging society in Japan. Since then, JARC has worked on systematic data collection on aging and published “Data Book on Aging in Japan.” This volume (2009-2010) is the 11th edition of the Data Book and contains the latest statistical data on aging in various fields. In addition, selected data are also available in an attached CD-ROM to make analysis and creation of figures easy.
Population aging has become a global phenomenon, and research on aging and related social changes has been conducted all over the world, including a number of international comparisons and international joint studies on aging. As the most aged society in the world, Japan brings increasing attention from experts not only in East Asia, where population is aging dramatically, but also in the Western countries from which Japan had learned a lot about aging. Considering this international interest, the Data Book also has English translation for selected tables.
As the challenges of an aged society become more complicated, comprehensive understanding and measures are needed to make this society a better place. In doing so, a wide variety of related data will play critical roles. We hope this Data Book is helpful in your research and practice efforts.
